Visit Catania and Syracuse From your Ship in Catania

Once your ship has arrived in the port of Catania, your driver will greet you just off the gangway. He will have a sign with your name on so you can easily spot him. The city of Catania is known for its Baroque architecture and buildings. It’s a pleasant city where you can easily spend a few hours.  Among the lovely squares in Catania, you’ll find Piazza del Duomo, which is the center of the city. Here you will find the Fountain of the Elephant, which is the symbol of Catania and the Palace of the Elephants, which today is the City Hall. In the same square, you can see the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Agatha, with a beautiful Baroque facade and a wooden door depicting the life of the martyr.

Not far from the central square you’ll find the Ursino Castle, built by Emperor Frederick II to stress royal power over the area. Today it houses a Civic Museum which you can visit for a small fee, about euros 6 per person. The museum features many Hellenistic and Roman artifacts, Medieval weapons, and paintings from the 15th to the 18th century.

At some point it will be time for lunch,  if you need help your Rome in Limo driver will suggest the venue. Just let him know whether you wish to have a typical Italian lunch in a family owned restaurant or just a quick bite on the way and he’ll indicate one which suits your needs.

After lunch, it will be time to move on to Syracuse. The city has one of the largest theaters in the entire ancient Greek world, catacombs far larger than those in Rome, one of Italy’s largest Roman amphitheaters, and one of the most complete and strongest fortifications remaining from the Greek era.

Upon your arrival, you can visit the archaeological area of Neapolis with its Greek and Roman amphitheaters, then move onto the most charming part of the town called ‘Ortigia Island’, where you can stroll along the ancient and Medieval narrow streets, arriving at the Duomo and the main square of the town, before you are returned to the Port of Catania at the end of the day.
