Visit Florence on Your Own From Your Ship In La Spezia

Most Cruise Lines use Livorno as the port of call in Tuscany since it is closer to the main attractions, but a few ships by Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, Carnival, and WindStar Cruises dock in La Spezia instead.

La Spezia is relatively small as a port and for this reason, vehicles are not allowed close to the ship, unlike in the other ports of call in Italy. Once your ship docks you’ll need to take the shuttle to reach the parking area at the exit of the port, where your driver will be waiting. He will have a sign with your name on to be easily spotted.

As mentioned before, La Spezia is further away from the main attractions, which means you’ll need about 2 hours to get to Florence. But no worries! You’ll be traveling comfortably in one of our Mercedes vehicles, which feature spacious plush seats, A/C and all the state of the art safety features provided by the Mercedes brand.

Our driver will drop you off in the center of Florence, where most of the sites are, from here you can explore the city on your own or have one of our licensed walking guides show you around for about 4 hours. You can visit the Church of Santa Croce, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery, Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio and the Accademia Gallery. The choice is yours!

The Accademia Gallery houses the David by Michelangelo, together with many other masterpieces by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Orcagna, to name just a few, will take about 40 minutes to visit. To ensure you don’t waste any time in line you have to reserve your tickets in advance at 11 am. To do this you need to call 011 39 055 294883 (from the US) and follow the instructions. Keep in mind the time difference when calling. Office hours are from 8.30 am to 6:30 pm Italian Local Time.

You might want to visit the Uffizi Museum too, but we suggest you do it instead of the Accademia Gallery, not together or you’ll be spending all your time at these two sites. As you’ll realize once you are in Florence, there are so many treasures to see in such a short time and you don’t want to cram everything in or you’ll end up stressing without really enjoying your day!

Please keep in mind that the Accademia Gallery is closed on Mondays, as are most museums in the city, so should your ship dock on this day, perhaps you should consider another shore excursion from the port of La Spezia.

In the early afternoon, you’ll meet your driver again at the arranged meeting point, which you will have established together in the morning, and head safely and comfortably back to the port of La Spezia where your ship awaits.
