Port of La Spezia – A Day in Lucca and Florence

La Spezia, unlike in the other ports of call in Italy, does not allow vehicles close to the ship. Let’s say your ship is one of the ones that docks in La Spezia…what now?

Once you get off the ship you’ll need to take the shuttle to reach the parking area at the exit of the port. This is where you’ll find your Rome in Limo driver. He will have a sign with your name on to be easily spotted.

These are some of the Cruise Lines that have a few of their ships docking in La Spezia:  Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, Carnival, and WindStar Cruises.

Now you’re ready to start your great day on shore visiting Lucca and Florence! Here’s what to see…

Lucca is famous for its incredibly well-preserved Medieval walls on which you can actually walk! Secret passages, hideaways, and ramparts hold the historical memory of a city that has much to tell and hide wonderful slices of heaven such as the Botanical Garden as well as a library, herbaria, laboratory-museums and much more.

As you cross the walls into the city, you enter the heart of the town and what is commonly referred to as the city of one hundred churches for a large number of religious buildings which represent marvelous examples of architectural Italian styles. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see them all due to time, but you can certainly fit in a few!

Your next destination…Florence.

Once you reach Florence you can explore the Church of Santa Croce, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery, Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio and the Accademia Gallery. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes since most of the sites are located in the historical center, which is mostly a pedestrian area.

The Accademia Gallery houses the David by Michelangelo, together with many other masterpieces by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Orcagna, to name just a few, will take about 40 minutes to visit. Suggested entrance time for this tour is 2 pm.  To ensure you don’t waste any time in line you have to reserve your tickets in advance.

To do this you need to call 011 39 055 294883 (from the US) and follow the instructions. Keep in mind the time difference when calling. Office hours are from 8.30 am to 6:30 pm Italian Local Time.

Please keep in mind that the Accademia Gallery is closed on Mondays, as are most museums in the city, so should your ship dock on this day, perhaps you should consider another shore excursion from the port of La Spezia.
