The Christmas holiday season in Rome starts on December 8, which is the holiday of the Immaculate Conception and ends on January 6, the Epiphany.

Pretty much the whole city is open normally with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, the day after Christmas, and New Years’ Day. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel will be closed on on December 8th, 25th and 26th  while the Colosseum will be closed on December 25th only.

Among the things you definitely don’t want to miss are the Christmas Trees around the major squares: the most famous one is the one in front of the Victor Emanuel Monument, but there’s also another in front of the Colosseum and one in Saint Peter’s Square which also features a beautiful Nativity.

All the major churches will also display Nativity Scenes so make sure you pop into all the churches you find…which won’t be difficult since there are over 900 churches in Rome!!!

Another treat of the Season is the Christmas Market in Piazza Navona, which will enchant kids and adults alike! There are games, sweets, Christmas ornaments, gift ideas, a Santa, a carousel and tons of colorful lights!
