Visit Pisa & Florence From Your Ship in La Spezia

Most Cruise Lines use Livorno as the port of call in Tuscany since it is  closer to the main attractions, but a few ships by Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, Carnival, and WindStar Cruises dock in La Spezia instead.

La Spezia is relatively small as a port and for this reason, vehicles are not allowed close to the ship, unlike in the other ports of call in Italy. Once your ship docks you’ll need to take the shuttle to reach the parking area at the exit of the port, where your driver will be waiting. He will have a sign with your name on to be easily spotted.

As mentioned before, La Spezia is further away from the main attractions, which means you’ll need about 2 hours to get to your first stop; Florence. You’ll be traveling through the beautiful scenery of the Tuscan countryside, dotted with olive groves, vineyards and quaint Medieval towns, so you won’t get bored!

Rome in Limo knows that traveling in comfort is a must, especially when the drive to reach your destination can be a little long, for this reason, we provide our clients with latest model Mercedes vehicles, which offer all the comfort and safety  features a luxury vehicle is meant to have! Choose your model from our fleet.

Once you reach Florence you can explore the Church of Santa Croce, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery, Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio and the Accademia Gallery. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes since most of the sites are located in the historical center, which is mostly a pedestrian area.

The Accademia Gallery houses the David by Michelangelo, together with many other masterpieces by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Orcagna, to name just a few, will take about 40 minutes to visit. To ensure you don’t waste any time in line you have to reserve your tickets in advance at 11 am. To do this you need to call 011 39 055 294883 (from the US) and follow the instructions. Keep in mind the time difference when calling. Office hours are from 8.30 am to 6:30 pm Italian Local Time.

We suggest 11 am entrance to fit into the rest of the schedule and since tickets have closed numbers, you should reserve them as soon as possible. Also, please keep in mind that the Accademia Gallery is closed on Mondays, so should your ship dock on this day, perhaps you should consider another shore excursion from the port of La Spezia.

You can choose to have lunch in one of the family owned restaurants or grab a bite of Pizza to eat while exploring the city. That’s entirely up to you, but given the short time you’re allowed off the ship and the multitude of sites to see we suggest a quick bite. After lunch, it will be time to drive to Pisa for your visit of the Piazza dei Miracoli, which includes the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto and, of course, the Leaning Tower, which is actually the Cathedral’s bell tower. If you wish to climb the Leaning Tower you need to get your tickets in advance. We suggest 3 pm so that you have enough time prior to returning to your ship.
